  • Birthright Israel | Tzfat and Givat Haviva
    Dec 25, 2016
(L-R) Laurina Bird (UNC), Michael Valenstein (UNCC), Hannah Factor (UNC), Parker Musler (UNCW), Isaac Kaplan (NC State)"After breakfast, we set out for Tzfat, one of the four holy cities of Judaism, where we spent the morning immersing ourselves in Judaic art, history and Kabbalah (Jewish mysticism). Some of us spent our time "haggling" (or as some members of our group incorrectly said, "heckling") vendors in the shuk. We ate a Yemenite delicacy called lachaouch (a savory veggie and cheese pancake wrap). In classic Israeli style, all of us were charged different prices for identical products." Winter 16 2Today we visited the Golan Heights, the northern part of Israel, where we were able to see the ancient city of Gamla. Alyssa Gildenhorn (UNC Charlotte) remarked, “I enjoyed visiting Gamla, where we saw ruins of a Jewish settlement that was besieged by the Romans. You don't see ancient things like that in America, and as our guide told us the story of the Jewish community there, it really came alive for me.”

  • Sixth Annual President's Interfaith & Community Service Campus Challenge 2016 Reflection
    Nov 16, 2016
Miriam RoochvargAs president of our Interbelief Initiative at NCSU, I attended the Sixth Annual President’s Interfaith and Community Service Campus Challenge at Gallaudet University. While there, I presented, along with students from three other colleges, on best practices for connecting with community partners on and off campus for interfaith programs. Planning interfaith work can be extremely draining, but hearing the insight, experiences and passion shared by the students, faculty and staff who do this at their colleges and their nonprofits was much needed. To be around others like me, who are passionate in doing what I’m doing, working today for a better tomorrow for all, is inspiring and reinforcing me to continue what I do.

As a matter of fact, it was the biggest one in recent memory. Each table at dinner was filled with a mix of students from different campuses.
