    Oct 13, 2016
SaraGottschalk Statewide Shabbat 2016We were honored to be able to host this semester's NC Hillel Statewide Shabbat dinner at UNC Greensboro. Over 70 students from across the state attended on September 16th and about 20 students were at the next morning's bagel brunch. Our student-run event was a huge success! As a matter of fact, it was the biggest one in recent memory. Each table at dinner was filled with a mix of students from different campuses.

  • Condolences to the Kaplan family
    Jul 20, 2016

Tobee KaplanI am very sad to share the news that Tobee Kaplan (zichrona livracha - may her memory be a blessing) passed away on Monday, July 18, 2016.

Tobee was an amazing woman, with great vision and boundless compassion. She exuded genuine warmth and humility, and with a twinkle in her eye, she was always eager to listen and delighted to learn about Hillel's efforts and celebrate our successes.

We will miss her friendship, her leadership and her wonderful smile.

  • Birthright Israel | Making a difference for immigrant children in Tel Aviv
    Jun 6, 2016
Andie with the day care center childrenWhen we first walked through the door at the top of the stairs, the 30 kids, who are all sons and daughters of Sudanese and Eritrean migrant workers, burst into cheers. They jumped and smiled and hugged our legs as we filed into the small, cramped room. I was immediately called abah (Hebrew for “dad”) and the girl volunteers emah (“mom”). Over the next two hours we would try to be the best mom and dad as we could to these neglected children.

  • Birthright Israel | Reflecting on peace, loss and sacrifice
    May 28, 2016
Israeli flags line the walk at Har Herzl national cemeteryServing in any military is tough work, but in America we don't fight on our own soil. US citizens don't all serve in the military and wonder if today will be their last. I watched the soldiers with us tear up after seeing graves of their friends or people who went to their school. I can't imagine having graduated high school with the knowledge that there's a chance that the next time I have a reunion with my friends, it will be in uniform over a classmate's grave.

  • Birthright Israel | Bus 131 experiences it all firsthand
    May 23, 2016
Bus 131 Summer 2016 NCSU studentsIf I were to go home and tell my friends about our Birthright Israel trip, most would be able to relate to hiking, beaches, and city life. But what makes this trip unique are the things that they cannot relate to -- the cultural and religious connection that we feel while we're here.
