  • Birthright Israel | Making a difference for immigrant children in Tel Aviv
    Jun 6, 2016
Andie with the day care center childrenWhen we first walked through the door at the top of the stairs, the 30 kids, who are all sons and daughters of Sudanese and Eritrean migrant workers, burst into cheers. They jumped and smiled and hugged our legs as we filed into the small, cramped room. I was immediately called abah (Hebrew for “dad”) and the girl volunteers emah (“mom”). Over the next two hours we would try to be the best mom and dad as we could to these neglected children.

  • Birthright Israel | Reflecting on peace, loss and sacrifice
    May 28, 2016
Israeli flags line the walk at Har Herzl national cemeteryServing in any military is tough work, but in America we don't fight on our own soil. US citizens don't all serve in the military and wonder if today will be their last. I watched the soldiers with us tear up after seeing graves of their friends or people who went to their school. I can't imagine having graduated high school with the knowledge that there's a chance that the next time I have a reunion with my friends, it will be in uniform over a classmate's grave.

  • Birthright Israel | Bus 131 experiences it all firsthand
    May 23, 2016
Bus 131 Summer 2016 NCSU studentsIf I were to go home and tell my friends about our Birthright Israel trip, most would be able to relate to hiking, beaches, and city life. But what makes this trip unique are the things that they cannot relate to -- the cultural and religious connection that we feel while we're here.

  • Birthright Israel | "Welcome back" to Bus 131
    May 20, 2016
Bus 131 tour guide Gadi speaks to the groupAnd then Gadi, our tour guide for the 10-day trip, told us something I don't think I'll ever forget. He said, "I'm not saying 'welcome to Israel', I'm saying 'welcome back.'

  • Seder our way
    May 9, 2016
Samantha and friends at the sederNo longer sitting at our parents' seder following as we were told, we were proud to make a seder how we wanted to. We selected our favorite parts of each of our families’ seders and combined them into a masterful and enjoyable seder, in which we all left laughing (and recovering after so much food).

  • North Carolina Hillel Students Condemn Discriminatory Legislation
    Apr 1, 2016
EqualityThe Jewish tradition emphasizes that we are all created b’tzelem elohim, in the image of God, a perspective that obligates us as Jews to look upon people of all races, sexual orientations, creeds, and gender presentations not only as equals, but as representations of the divine.

This legislation undermines these deeply held tenets, while contradicting the equal protections ostensibly guaranteed to all American citizens and North Carolina residents alike.
